Buses Not Running
Inclement weather and/or hazardous road conditions may necessitate suspension of school bus service. School buses shall operate on all school instructional days to convey pupils to and from schools except where inclement weather and/or hazardous road conditions constitute a significant hazard to the safety of school bus students.
Any of the following factors, or combinations of them, shall serve as guidelines for considering cancellation of classes or early dismissal of students by the Superintendent in consultation with the Director of Transportation may suspend school bus service:

  • A temperature of -40 degrees or lower (including wind chill) as reported by the Weather Office for the area in question;
  • Visibility of less than 300 meters as determined by the Public Weather Information Office in Edmonton or Grande Prairie; and/or
  • Advisory reports from police, municipal or other local road officials. Where the police have made decisions regarding road travel, closure, etc., these shall prevail over any or all other regulations.

Notification
Announcements concerning non-operation of buses will be made to the following radio stations between 6:30 & 7:00 a.m. on CFCW, CISN, CBC, CHED as well as Global TV. The non-operation of buses will also be posted on www.ngps.ca and on the @ngpsoes twitter feed. Bus Drivers will also activate a fan-out for their route notifying parents.

Parental Expectations
Parents are expected to decide whether their children should be sent to school on buses when weather and/or road conditions are suspect. Parents shall ensure their children are dressed appropriately in accordance with prevailing or potential weather conditions. During the period from November 1 to March 30, all school bus passengers shall be required to have in their possession proper outerwear, headgear, mitts and proper footwear.

Procedure During Day
Whenever a bus driver determines that hazardous road or climatic conditions arise during the course of a school day, s/he shall obtain approval from the Director of Transportation and will phone the school with an approximate time to pick up students on his/her bus. The Principal shall release such students when requested by the bus driver. The bus driver shall make every effort to ensure students are not dropped off if no one is home to supervise. Parents are to arrange alternate drop-off locations on the same bus route in the event of school closures during the day. Parents are to inform bus drivers and the Principal of the drop-off location.
